Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com With changing weather patterns and extreme conditions becoming more common across the globe, it only makes sense to take an extra measure of precaution when it comes to protecting your home against relentless precipitation. Before you find yourself underwater, here are some ways to be better prepared for the rain. Review Your Home Insurance It's important that you do not take your home insurance for granted. Take the opportunity to assess the changing conditions and check your coverage annually to ensure you have all your bases covered. As more geographical areas that were previously unaffected by flooding are experiencing catastrophic conditions, perhaps it may be time to consider additional flood coverage if it's not in your standard home insurance package. Further, your home insurance agent is your advisor as far as what you need to protect what is likely your biggest investment. Bring your concerns and questions to your agent regula...

Top 10 Most Expensive Mistakes You’re Making on Your Home

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com By Cary Teller Homes cost a lot of money to maintain. But are you spending extra money unnecessarily on upkeep? Here are the 10 most expensive mistakes you could be making in your home. 1. Using Traditional Light bulbs If you still have incandescent light bulbs in your home, you could be throwing a lot of money away every month on inflated electric bills. Over its life span, an incandescent bulb can use $180 worth of electricity. A CFL will only  use  $41 worth of electricity over the same time period. Even better is the LED bulb, which only uses $30 per bulb. Think what replacing every light bulb in your home could do to your home's bottom line. 2. Ignoring a Leaky Faucet A leaky faucet that drips one drop per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year, which is enough water to take more than 180 showers. Some of us live in areas where water is plentiful, but for those of us in areas plagued with drought, this could be costing ...

Should You Change the Style of Windows in Your House?

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com Windows that are old, damaged or worn out are inefficient and can lead to high utility bills. Replacing windows can be a huge financial investment, but it can also be an opportunity to choose styles that are better suited to your family’s needs and preferences. If you’ve lived in your house for several years, you may have a running list of things that you don’t like about the current windows. For example, some rooms might not get much sunlight or ventilation. Windows in some areas may be difficult to clean, or maybe your house is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape that you wish you could see more of. Replacing the windows gives you an opportunity to address these issues. Benefits of Various Window Styles If you’d like to let more sunlight into certain rooms, you may want to consider sliding windows. If there’s space available outside, you can install large bay or bow windows that will extend out into the yard. A picture window can prov...

The Best Use of Time (and Money) When It Comes to Renovations

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com In the current sellers’ market, many homeowners wonder what, if anything, needs to be remodeled before they list their house. That’s where a trusted real estate professional comes in. They can help you think through today’s market conditions and how they impact what you should – and shouldn’t – renovate before selling. Here are some considerations a professional will guide you through: 1. With current supply challenges, buyers may be willing to take on projects of their own. A more balanced market typically sees a 6-month supply of homes for sale. Above that, and we’re in a buyers’ market. Below that, and we’re in a sellers’ market. According to a recent report by the  National Association of Realtors  (NAR), our current supply of homes for sale, while rising, still remains solidly in sellers’ market territory: “ Unsold inventory sits at a 2.6-month supply at the current sales pace , modestly up from May's 2.5-month supp...

Common Misconceptions About Vinyl Siding

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com Vinyl siding is a popular choice for homeowners who want to improve their home’s appearance and save money. Despite vinyl siding’s popularity, some people shy away from it because of misconceptions. Some of those things were true when vinyl siding was introduced in the 1950s, but it has undergone a series of improvements since then—and many of those concerns are no longer justified. Misconception #1: Vinyl Siding is Weak and Flimsy Vinyl may be thinner than some other types of siding, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t strong. Vinyl is a durable material that can protect your house from damage caused by wind and blowing objects. Vinyl is even more durable than other materials that appear stronger. Brick can crack if a house shifts as it settles, but vinyl siding won’t get damaged because it can bend.  Misconception #2: Vinyl Siding Requires a Lot of Maintenance Vinyl siding is made from tough polyvinyl chloride plastic that resists damage from ...

Plumbing Tips: How Your Pets Could Be Damaging Your Home’s Pipes

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com By Anita Ginsburg Pets are a wonderful addition to any home, but if you aren't careful, they can also be the source of some expensive plumbing repairs. Keep these tips in mind to prevent your cat or dog from damaging your home's pipes: Keep Pet Hair Out of the Drains Your furry friend will need a bath from time to time. However, it's best to do this outside whenever possible. Besides preventing your bathroom from becoming a mess, this also keeps pet hair out of the drains. Shedding fur can quickly clog your plumbing. If your pet spends a lot of time outside, there may be a lot of dirt or mud on them. This muck can mix with the pet hair and create a tough clog. Don't Flush Cat Litter Some cat litter claims to be safe to flush down the toilet. The truth is that any kind of cat litter is better disposed of in the garbage. Flushing cat litter can create a blockage that is almost as hard as concrete. Cover Exposed Pipes Cats and do...

Infuse Living Spaces With Color

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com From experiences to surroundings, the past year has brought a renewed focus on feeding the soul. In an era of overstimulation and information overload, many are finding a new appreciation for living life minimally but with maximum experiences. At the same time, as the focus on physical and mental wellness heightens, design experts see those trends reflected in a more considered approach to design inspired by color therapy, which makes it possible to create beautiful spaces filled with healing color.  With an expertly coordinated color palette, like the Color Collections from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, colors work in perfect harmony in any combination. Thoughtful use of color is among the most effective design tools for reveal-worthy sty...

How to Improve Your Home’s Air Quality

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com As Americans continue to spend more time at home, it’s important to support the health and comfort of those living spaces. Regularly cleaning and disinfecting surfaces is an important step, but one often overlooked aspect of a home’s health and comfort is its air quality. Proactively addressing potential air quality issues can result in cleaner air and more comfortable living. There are multiple factors that may affect your home’s air quality.  Indoor particulate matter consists of the visible and invisible airborne particles in the air that can enter your nose and lungs, some triggering allergies, asthma and other potential health problems. Carbon monoxide, sometimes called the “silent killer,” is a colorless, odorless gas that can build up to dangerous levels if not properly ventilated, causing headaches, drowsiness and, in some cases, death. Too much humidity can encourage the growth of bacteria and mold. Too little humidity can d...

Think about how you typically use the room, any problems you have encountered with its design, and ways to make it more functional and attractive. How Do You Use the Dining Room? Some families think of the dining room as a place to host formal gatherings and want its design to reflect that purpose. Others use the dining room on a regular basis for ordinary family meals and want a space that is functional and that has a relaxed atmosphere.  If you use the dining room for daily family dinners, choose a table that’s large enough for your immediate family and guests. If you use the room only for holiday gatherings and other special events, a long table that can accommodate a large group may be the best choice. If you would prefer to seat guests in smaller groups to promote more intimate con...
