How to Care for Carpet If You Have Pets

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com If you have one or more pets, you probably struggle to keep your home looking and smelling clean. Fur and pet dander can easily cling to carpets. Pets can spread dirt that they bring in from outdoors and leave waste on the floor, plus untrimmed nails can snag on even the shortest carpet fibers. Here are some ways you can prevent damage from your pets to your carpet and keep your home clean. Vacuum and Clean Carpets Regularly When you own pets, frequent vacuuming is essential. How often you should vacuum will depend on the number and types of pets you have and how much they shed. Vacuuming once or twice a week may be sufficient, or you may need to vacuum every day to pick up all the hair that your pets shed. Vacuum furniture, too, so dirt and hair don’t get transferred to carpets. You may want to use a powder that you can sprinkle on carpets before you vacuum. A powder designed especially for pets can help remove pet dander that’s stuck to carpe...

Plumbing Tips: How Your Pets Could Be Damaging Your Home’s Pipes

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com By Anita Ginsburg Pets are a wonderful addition to any home, but if you aren't careful, they can also be the source of some expensive plumbing repairs. Keep these tips in mind to prevent your cat or dog from damaging your home's pipes: Keep Pet Hair Out of the Drains Your furry friend will need a bath from time to time. However, it's best to do this outside whenever possible. Besides preventing your bathroom from becoming a mess, this also keeps pet hair out of the drains. Shedding fur can quickly clog your plumbing. If your pet spends a lot of time outside, there may be a lot of dirt or mud on them. This muck can mix with the pet hair and create a tough clog. Don't Flush Cat Litter Some cat litter claims to be safe to flush down the toilet. The truth is that any kind of cat litter is better disposed of in the garbage. Flushing cat litter can create a blockage that is almost as hard as concrete. Cover Exposed Pipes Cats and do...

Co-Dependent Pets: How to Reduce Separation Anxiety When Owners Leave Home

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com By Patrick Connolly (TNS)—It's a story many pet owners are now familiar with: You've been home for months, following orders to social distance and spending more time with dogs, cats and other non-human companions. Then, the day comes to go back to the office or the chance to escape for a vacation.   Your pet stares back at you as you leave, wondering when or if you'll ever return again. To some animals, it might feel like the end of the world.   Pups and feline friends have perhaps become more codependent amid owners staying home virtually all the time, and leaving the house again can take a toll on them. Take it from Kim Bissing, owner of Beyond The Leash Dog Training.   "We've seen about 15 separation anxiety cases just in two weeks. It's getting worse because people are starting to pick up and going back to work," she said. "We have had about 20 new puppy owners in our six-week class and about 17 are alread...

Keeping Your Pet Safe During July Fourth

Image
David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com Safety this summer should be top of mind for everyone in your family, including your pets. But Independence Day celebrations can lead to real terror for your furry family members, and even create some hard safety concerns. To help, American Humane weighs in. If your pet is upset by thunder, a door slamming or other loud noises, Fourth of July fireworks will be utterly terrifying, so take these precautions, via American Humane: - Your pets won't enjoy the fireworks display, so leave them at home! Keep them inside, shielded from loud noises. Keep windows closed and draw the shades to minimize the sound and flashes of light. - If loud noises upset your pets, do not leave them alone while you're out celebrating; make sure someone can stay with them. If you're home, act calm and give them reassuring pets and hugs…animals look to you to see how you're reacting. - If you think your pets should be tranquilized, consult yo...

Protect Your Home From Fleas

David Deem 714-997-3486 Dave@DeemTeam.com Every once in a while, your home, or the home you want to buy, can get infested with fleas. These little vampire-like creatures actually spend very little of their time on your pet; the female flea prefers to lay her eggs in dark, damp places such as cracks in the floor or a corner of the basement. The flea lays up to 20 eggs at a setting and may deposit as many as 400 during her lifetime. It takes only about a week for the eggs to hatch into small, white, toothy-mouthed worms. This larval form feeds on feces, debris, hair and vegetation. Each larva then spins a cocoon and pupates for a period that can range from seven days to a year. The adult flea then jumps onto your pet to feed and the cycle starts over again. If you find fleas inhabiting your carpets and furniture, begin your treatment with a thorough cleaning. Frequent vacuuming of the house, especially pet areas, is necessary to keep fleas at bay. Pay special attention to d...
