How to Paint With Dark Colors

Neutrals seem to get all the attention when it comes to paint...and for good reason. They can make a space feel larger and serve as an accommodating backdrop for any decor.

But what if the basics give you the blahs? You can go bold with paint if you follow a few guidelines. Consider these strategies for using dark paint in your home from Farrow & Ball color expert Joa Studholme:

1. Start small. If you’re using a bold hue, choose a smaller space like a hallway or entryway so the color doesn’t become overpowering. It will serve as a unique surprise as visitors enter, then can be followed by lighter and brighter colors as they progress through your home.

2. Consider natural light. The natural light of a given room should factor into the decision if you’re choosing a dark paint. If you have a room that doesn’t get a lot of light, painting it a light color will not make it feel brighter. In rooms that have little natural light, a darker color will add depth. You can then use light-colored accents to make it cozy.

3. Dark can be cozy. You may want to consider using a dark color to create a cozy nook in an area of your home, even your bedroom. Just be sure to use a dark color with warm undertones as opposed to cool ones. Cool dark colors can feel harsh, whereas warm dark colors will “cocoon” you.

4. Play it safe with trim. If you’re still feeling trepidatious about your paint choice, indulge your dark-color penchant by using it on trim, such as baseboards, chair rail, door or window frames. The rich hues will make a dramatic contrast against white or neutral walls.

Nonetheless, it is the lowest level at the end of April since tracking began in 2004.
